What a day.
The beers were cold.
The burgers were hot.
The room was loud enough to be heard somewhere near the halfway line.
And Australia got the win.
From the moment the first fans started rolling through the doors, there was a feeling that this wasn’t going to be an ordinary Sunday. Green and gold jerseys appeared from every direction, tables filled early, and complete strangers were suddenly on a first-name basis by half-time.
That’s football.
Or beer.
Possibly both.
The Green & Gold burger made its World Cup debut and quickly proved itself worthy of selection. Smash patties, bacon, beetroot relish, grilled pineapple, golden hash browns and enough hi melt cheese to make a cardiologist raise an eyebrow.
A true Australian all-rounder.
Meanwhile, wings were flying out of the kitchen at an alarming rate, schooners were disappearing just as quickly, and every near miss, tackle and chance on goal was met with the sort of emotional response usually reserved for lottery wins and tax refunds.
Then came the final whistle.
Australia had done the job.
The bar erupted.
High fives were exchanged between people who had never met before. Chairs remained upright, which exceeded management’s expectations. Voices were lost. Smiles were everywhere.
Exactly how a World Cup game should be watched.
A massive thank you to everyone who joined us. Whether you came for the football, the burgers, the beers, the company, or simply because your couch doesn’t generate atmosphere, you helped make it one of the best days we’ve had in a long time.
The World Cup is only just getting started.
The Green & Gold is still on the menu.
The match-day specials are still flowing.
And if yesterday taught us anything, it’s that football is best watched surrounded by fellow fans, cold beers and a room full of nervous optimism.
Stay tuned for details on the next Australian match. We’ll be showing as many of the Aussie games as we can, provided FIFA remembers that some of us have jobs and can’t reasonably be expected to start drinking at 3am on a Tuesday.
